Journalism Association of Community Colleges

Each year, Moorpark College Journalism students participate in regional and statewide conferences where they attend professional workshops and compete against other journalism students across the state.

This year, the Journalism Association of Community Colleges met April 9-11, 2015 for its statewide conference in Sacramento. Ten Moorpark College students, including nine who also serve on the Student Voice team that produces news and features online and in print, and one who is a beginning journalism student, attended.

Winning student productions this year included, from left, Alan Ruiz, 2nd place, Editorial Cartoon;

Brian Varela, Honorable Mention, News Judgment; and Nik Saumuels and Melody Forsell, Meritorious Award for Video Journalism.

“The most valuable aspect of the conference for me was really just being in the environment with all of the workshops and other student journalists,” said Varela, who serves as editor of the 20-member Student Voice staff this semester. “It just really solidified the field for me and made me aware that I’m becoming a journalist, and made me want to start thinking like a journalist, reading more and being more aware of what’s going on the world.”

For Ruiz, who writes sports for the Student Voice, it was mostly about the competitions.

“For me, it was getting that actual experience in journalism,” Ruiz added. “It was really important to me as a transferring student to have the chance to compete and use the stuff I learned in class against other students. Also, hanging out with my classmates and getting to know them better was also a great experience for me.”
