The Journalism Program at Moorpark College

Journalism Provides a Broad Knowledge Base

The Journalism Program at Moorpark College provides a broad survey of the workings of the mass communication media today, as well as a foundation to the journalistic skills, knowledge and ethics needed to work in the many media fields that are hiring our graduates, including news, entertainment, and sports media, as well as public relations and community or corporate communication.

This program provides foundational knowledge, skills and prerequisites for those fields. It also provides a solid foundation for any liberal arts area of study.

Our graduates are working in news reporting, editing, video production, web and page design; television news reporting and production; radio on-air production assisting, public relations and community relations, and at least one is a practicing attorney.

There were 120 students who declared Journalism majors in Spring 2015. When they complete their 60 units at Moorpark College, including the 18-unit Journalism program for transfer, Moorpark College Journalism program graduates transfer to various CSU’s, UC’s and private universities. Many will have completed internships or secured work in their fields.

Our primary transfer institution is the nearby CSUN, where more than 800 students are pursuing Journalism majors. Moorpark College Journalism graduates are also attending or have attended UCLA, UC Berkeley, USC, CSU San Diego, San Francisco, Fullerton,Fresno, Hastings School of Law, and more.

They meet each other early on through Journalism/Mass Communication Majors Meetings, and their Intro to Mass Communication classes. Later, they get to know each other through their smaller writing and reporting classes. Then, they cap their learning experience by becoming part of a working team for the Student Voice when they enroll in the student news media classes, Jour 10 series. There, as members of the Student Voice staff, they work together to produce the StudentVoiceOnline.com and the Student Voice in print.
