Coming off of a disappointing year, the Raiders basketball team is looking to bounce back and have a more promising season than they did last year.
Finishing last season off with a 9-18 overall record, the Raiders are looking into an encouraging year with the additions of seven new freshmen on the team.
Head Coach Remy McCarthy said he is very fortunate to have eight new players for the season.
“These kids have shown a great work ethic to play together so we are optimistic about our season,” said McCarthy.
The Raiders basketball team is getting top recruits from schools all over the state. Spencer Levy started on the first ever CIF Championship Team at Calabasas High School. The Raiders will have a scoring threat in Matt Ramon who holds the scoring record at Oxnard High School with 1,471 points in four seasons. They will also have the height that they have never had in Jordan Garrett who is 6’8″ and Zach Davis who is 6’6″. Out of all of their newcomers, they have two leaders returning to the team in Sahdi Odu and Joe Brinton.
Sahdi Odu, small forward, said that his team has a good chance of being one of the tougher teams in the conference.
“Last year we had a couple of teams that were pretty good, we had Cuesta and Ventura, two top teams,” said Odu. “This year we have seen some of the teams play in our league and it’s balanced, everybody is equal this year and we have a very good chance of winning it but we have a very long season.”
Athletic Director Howard Davis said that the team has high expectations for the season.
“Much deeper, much more talented throughout the roster, last year we had two really good players but other than that it wasn’t so good,” said Davis.
Starting off their pre-conference on Nov. 8, the Raiders are (3-2) by defeating LA Valley College, Pasadena City College, and West Hills College. The Raiders don’t play their conference games until Jan. 9 when they face off against Cuesta College at 5 p.m. at Moorpark College.
Davis said that the conference games are going to be a challenge for the Raiders.
“The only thing that is a little scary is the rest of the conference is much improved and good too,” said Davis. “I think we can play with just about anyone in the whole state let alone the conference we are looking forward to it.”
