Dear Editor,
I am writing this letter because of my disgust and ennui with the Oxnard College Associated Student Government. Recently they have accused a Senator with his inability to perform duties and questioned his participation. I think the remaining ASG needs to take a good look in the mirror if they are going to accuse anyone.
ASG has the majority of its events between the hours of 10am-2pm, well what about the rest of the students who attend after 2pm or before 10am. I ask you ASG what have you done for your students? When was the last time you went to the night classes men and asked for their input?
I have been in classes with members of ASG and only because I have seen their picture was I aware of their participation in ASG, I find that unacceptable behavior that at no time do these Senators announce that they are ASG nor inform the students of activities, clubs events, or even scholarship information.
In today’s economic time every dollar counts and now that admissions to colleges are becoming more scrupulous everything counts, club activities, scholarships, anything a student can put on an entry application or even a resume for a job. Recently there was an opportunity by the Oxnard Scholarship Foundation and I honestly say I heard about it from three students in ASG.
One because it was a class assignment, the other was promoting a workshop to fill out the scholarship application, and the other ASG person is always discussing ASG. Do they know how many students that they just did a disservice to? How many working students could benefit from these kinds of opportunities?
More than half the student body at Oxnard College could have benefited from these opportunities and yet only 90 students attended the workshop and only 187 applied out of approximately 7500 students, you do the math. So I ask you ASG who are you really serving. I believe all of you need a refresher course in your By-laws and Constitution, because not one of you is holding your oath to office and if you are unable to perform, then resign.
Sincerely,
Francine Ruiz
