Moorpark College students and staff interested in having their creative output published in this year’s edition of the Moorpark Review Creative Arts Magazine can now submit their work.
Tracy Tennenhouse, English professor and Moorpark Review Advisor looks forward to the release of the 13th edition this spring.
“The whole purpose is for the creative expression of this campus,” said Tennenhouse. “It is important for the students to be able to share their work.”
This opportunity allows artists to submit their work within a variety of categories. Categories of art that are displayed in the magazine can be fictional stories, poetry, graphic art and song lyrics. Since it is open call, anyone attending Moorpark College can participate.
Tennenhouse and English professor Hart Schulz will be reviewing submissions along with the help of their Literary Magazine Editing class. All submissions will be carefully chosen without prior knowledge as to who the artist is. The rubric for scoring submissions was created by the students and staff members associated with the Moorpark Review.
Editor-in-chief, Charmaine Cooke, leads the literary discussions of the submissions for this year’s issue. The class then conferences together, with each person inputting their own opinion on every submission.
The award-winning Moorpark Review was created in 1998 to exhibit the imaginative work of the staff and students here at Moorpark College.
“It’s a great opportunity for students,” said Cooke. “It’s hard for people to get published, so this is a great opportunity to try and try again.”
Co-advisor, Schulz also looks forward to the once-a-year printed issue of the Moorpark Review. He believes that writers truly benefit from being chosen by the staff. Since the submissions are reviewed with honesty and decorum, the magazine represents a fair variety of artwork from Moorpark College’s creative community.
“People use this as a stepping stone to get to other places,” said Schulz.
The final deadline for fiction is Feb. 11. The deadline dates for other artwork will be posted Feb. 11, as well. It is preferred that work be submitted earlier, but art will still be accepted by the specified dates.
