Students hoping to pursue careers in music can learn the theory and technology they need to work in today’s industry through a class at Moorpark College.
Moorpark College music Professor Nathan Bowen teaches Introduction to Music Technology for students who want to learn to write songs, musical scores, produce and record in digital format, or find other work in the musical field.
“This class is tremendously important for helping students learn how to understand the basics of file formats, working within deadlines, and gaining skills with standard industry software tools, ” Bowen said. “If you wish to pursue the music business you have to know how to use the proper software for it.”
This class is already full for the spring 2013 semester.
The Introduction to Technology class has no prerequisite. In fact, Bowen said, some projects in the class are specifically non-compositional in nature and do not require students to have a deep understanding of music notation and theory.
Nevertheless, Bowen recommends students come to the class with at least some foundation in music with a class like Music Fundamentals.
Music student Rebecca Decuir, 22, said Bowen works to help students succeed in his class. She said that she can tell that he has passion for the subject.
