Nick Turner believes that a sense of professionalism is lacking from the position of Student Trustee, and if elected to that position, he aims to fix that.
“I believe it is not recognized professionally,” said Turner, who is currently the director of student services for the Moorpark College Associated Student Government.
He believes that position has lost a level of professionalism due to the actions of previous trustees.
His main goals are also to try and encourage communication between the three VCCCD campus student governments, which he believes can help the collegeswork together to overcome common problems the governing body may face.
“Communication is important to recognize issues from arising and offer help,” said Turner.
Drumming up support for the athletic department is also an important goal for Turner, who donned the costume of the schools the “Moorpark Raider,” and he believes that seeing the football stadium not even close to half full on a Friday night is something that needs to be rectified.
“I would really like to see people excited for the athletic department,” said Turner.
Turner also believes that, from an unpleasant experience with the athletic department that eventually led to him hanging up his cape, there are some problems that need to be addressed.
“There are some issues in that department that is affecting the popularity of the sports program,” said Turner.
He strongly believes in making sure no money is cut from the fine arts program, andhow he feels that “the amount of creativity in that department is a wonderful thing.”
Last semester Turner started a program called “No Recycling Left Behind,” where he went around campus collecting cans and other recyclables, had them processed and then donated a portion of the money to the Moorpark College Scholarship Fund.
He wants to focus more energy on a recycling program, where the $5,000 that could be used towards the college.
“Just recycling isn’t good enough,” said Turner.
When he looks through the list of things he wants to accomplish for the campus as a trustee, the one goal that sits at the top is one of most important ideals to reach for while serving in any position on a student government: that is to serve the students.
“I’m here for the Ventura County Community College students, because that is what I am,” said Turner.
