Students elected Andrew Brown for President of the Associated Students at Moorpark College on April 17.
Brown, 19, psychology major ran against William Sloane, Roger Cuevas, and Thomas Scheiter. Brown ended up with 135 votes to win the election. Sloane came in second with 127 votes.
Brown plans to encourage more student participation in and out of the classroom.
Sharon Miller, faculty advisor for the Associated Students said that the students had some good candidates this year.
“I thought that all the candidates did a really good job with handling their campaigns,” said Miller.
The turnout for the election was 443 students with the Vice President candidate Erin Nosco receiving the most votes with 343 among all of the candidates.
Bradley Krebs, Associated Students Election Committee, said that the election was a close race.
“This is the closest election for president we have had in 20 years,” said Krebs.
Other election winners include Andrew Blackwelder for External Affairs, Malik Sanders for Campus Events, Diego Medina for Budget and Finance, Jesse Alcala for Academic Affairs, Victoria Zolfaghari for Student Organizations, Julianna Orsay for Constitution and Rules, Andrew Anderson for Public Relations, and Melvin Kim for Student Services.
Nicholas Rodriguez, Oxnard College student, won the Student Trustee election. He will be sworn as Student Trustee 2013-14 in June. Approximately 830 students voted district-wide with Rodriquez receiving the majority of the votes.
Miller said that Elijah Coyle did a great job with the student elections for this semester.
“He ran the smoothest student election committee in 20 years,” said Miller.
