The Moorpark College Men’s Soccer team wrapped up their season by naming Mike Phillips the most valuable player.
Phillips, a sophomore from Newbury Park, did not lead the Raiders in goals scored or steals, but his presence made the biggest impact on the team.
“I earned MVP due to my self-motivation, hard work and from constantly being challenged by my teammates and opponents,” Phillips said. “With this being my last year of playing, I had to finish with everything I had.”
“He was like the engine of the team since he played center midfield,” team captain Michael Trejo said.
The center midfielder’s job is to stop counter attacks and he distributed the ball to the forwards, making him a pivotal role player.
Trejo received the Leadership Captain award after his great efforts as a leader for the Raiders. He was named captain at the beginning of the season by his teammates and coaches in hopes that he would lift the Raiders with his leading ability and hard work ethic.
“Michael is a natural born leader who everyone backs no matter what,” Phillips said. “He always knew what to say to get us motivated before a game.”
Between Phillips and Trejo, they led the Raiders to seven wins and one tie. The leadership of these two was just not enough though, the Raiders lost 13 games this season knocking them out of playoff contention.
The Raiders showed strength in the beginning of the season with scoring, however midway through the season the numbers started to drop. They fell six games straight after a two game win streak.
The Raiders will look to bounce back from this year in 2014 without their two leaders. Phillips and Trejo will both departing from the team as sophomores and plan to move on to universities in their junior years.
