The Lady Raider basketball team has been working hard in preparation for their upcoming WSC season.
With a 5-2 winning record, the Lady Raiders are already very confident that their season will be successful. After making it to the final eight in the state tournament last season, the team is looking to come back stronger than ever in order to surpass their previous season’s success.
According to Athletic Director Howard Davis, the WSC is one of the most competitive conferences in the state with the six-time state champions Ventura College always being a front runner.
“The winning preseason record is a good indicator of our team’s quality,” Davis said. “Our conference though, is one of the toughest in the state.”
With every new season, comes new players: but this year a new coach was added as well. Remy McCarthy, who is also the Men’s Basketball coach, stepped to fill in the position as head coach. McCarthy has had great success as the men’s coach, but is now looking to transfer that to the women’s team as well.
Though a coach plays a vital role in any sport, the team is what decides each game. A team that can perform together must be cohesive and know how to work well with each individual player.
“The most important thing is that we have a talented group of young ladies that have exemplary team chemistry,” Davis said.
The women know how to communicate with each other and it only enhances their performance.
“We know each other and we get each other. That’s why we play so well together,” Sophomore guard Samantha McCarthy said.
After taking third last season and second the season before, all the Lady Raiders have on their mind is becoming stronger and better than last season. They have put in the hard work and it has already begun to pay-off. Any winning record is hard to achieve, but to hold one is even more difficult and that is what they have been doing for the last few weeks.
“I do think our team has the potential to surpass last year’s regular season success,” Davis said.
With the athletic department in full support of the team, the coaches and players feel everything coming together and are anxious for the conference season to begin.
“I know we are going to do well this season. I just feel it,” McCarthy said,
The Lady Raiders play their first WSC game against Allan Hancock on January eighth at Moorpark College.
