The Lady Raiders wrap up the season with two MVP’s and two all-league selections.
The Moorpark College Lady Raider’s soccer team finished up their season with two most valuable players.
Marissa Horton and Julie Watson were awarded and shared the most valuable player honors by the players and coaches for the Lady Raiders.
With a season cut short by injury, Horton still made a major impact on the team as a leader and motivator.
“The coaches and all the girls really pushed me and helped me to keep improving,” Horton said. “I think everyone could tell I tried so hard because I really wanted the team to be successful.”
Horton, a freshman, has another year of eligibility to play soccer for Moorpark College and to help lead the team in a more positive direction next year.
Julie Watson also led the Lady Raiders throughout the season battling with a broken elbow.
“Julie was consistent, she worked so hard,” Horton said. “She is such an amazing player and she is a role model to me.”
The Lady Raiders ended their season 6-4-9. Pierce College took the division after finishing in a tie with the Lady Raiders for the last game of the season.
Struggling with scoring early on, the Lady Raiders had a tough time coming by wins. Ties filled the stat column but, midway through the season a three game win streak allowed some breathing room.
Cassie Mattison and Olivia Hicks were two more players among the Lady Raiders who were awarded honors. Mattison received first team all-league while Hicks received second team all-league.
“As a team I felt as though we had a successful season, regardless of not making the playoffs,” Mattison said. “There was great love and respect for each other and the chemistry showed on the field.”
The Lady Raiders fell short of the playoffs, but begin their off season prep for the 2014 season.
