Moorpark College’s very own French farce “The Learned Ladies” hit the stage for opening weekend leaving the audience with an abundance of comedy and romance.
The play, directed by Suzanne Fagan, she had the challenge of teaching the cast how to dominate the language written in rhyming couplets in which two rhyming lines are of a verse that form a unit alone or as part of a poem.
Theatre Arts Chairman, John Loprieno has expressed that it is their goal to provide the theatre students with “solid and diverse working” knowledge.
The plot circles around two lovers, Henriette, played by Greta Weinstein, and Clitandre, played by Evan Smith as they battle to be married.
They two fight tirelessly for their love despite strong opposition of Henriette’s mother Philaminte, played by Natasha Buran. Though the marriage is supported by her father and uncle, it is still not enough to overcome Philaminte.
Buran was able to grasp the role of her character above and beyond, engaging the audience with great humor.
Not only did Smith, Weinstein, and Buran engage the audience with their humorous performances but the entire cast attracted everyone with their exquisite costumes.
“I was in shock when I saw what they were wearing. I could only image how much time and effort was put into their costumes,” Political Science major and Moorpark student Chloe Andrews stated. “Not only that but to be able to master the language and movements on stage, I was taken away by such a great performance.”
The comedy classic was a definite hit with the audience. Moorpark College’s Theatre Department produced another one for the books with stunning costumes and a well-polished cast.
