Within the first three days of the new semester at Moorpark, there were five traffic-related accidents.
According to Officer Andy Huisenga of the Moorpark College Campus Police, students driving around the campus are, “Inattentive.”
Where the street curves on Campus Park Road, next to the grass overflow lot, has had its fair share of accidents, according to Huisenga.
“People come around that curve too fast,” he said.
However, despite the frequent collisions, Lt. Steve Kegely is optimistic, due to the increased presence of other law enforcement agencies.
“It seems it has gotten better,” Kegely said. “When I first got here, we didn’t have the increased enforcement of the Highway Patrol and the Sheriff’s Department.”
Thanks to the Highway Patrol and Sheriff’s Department cracking down on student drivers last year, current students seem to be more aware of their speed.
However, young drivers still make mistakes. “Inexperience, that’s huge,” said 33-year-old Theater major Jeremy Hanes. “Not looking both ways, not paying attention and all of those things.”
Kegly has a simple solution for students eager to leave campus.
“When you get out at rush hour time, stop and have a cup of coffee or sit under a tree and read a book and wait a half hour.”
