Moorpark College freshman Jonathan Weeks has been named SCFA Northern Division Defensive Player of the Week.
In Moorpark’s season opener, the Raiders went into triple overtime and trounced Orange Coast College 27-21. While MC’s offense put the points on the board, the defense was the reason the Raiders walked out of Griffin Stadium with a win. Moorpark’s defense stepped up with one interception, two forced fumbles, three sacks, and four tipped passes.
Safety Jonathan Weeks led the defense with 12 tackles, and three tipped passes, one of which led to an OCC turnover, giving the Raiders possession of the football ultimately resulting in a scoring drive. Weeks was given this award for his performance in the season opener.
Weeks is a freshman business major at Moorpark College. Weeks, a Los Angeles native, attended North Hollywood High school. Weeks was a dual-sport athlete in high school, playing basketball and football, but where Weeks really shined was on the football field. In the 2012-13 season, Weeks was named Los Angeles City Section Division II League MVP and 1st Team All CIF.
“Being only a freshman I was surprised I was chosen, but it’s definitely an honor,” said safety Jonathan Weeks ” I thought some of my other teammates deserved it.”
Despite being only a freshman, Weeks has garnered quite a bit of attention and his coaches have noticed his skill. Coach Will Thurston discussed Jonathan’s ability, and his performance in the Raider opener.
“Jonathan is a quick, and aggressive player,” said Thurston “He is a hard hitting safety, but not only that; he is a great kid as well.”
Weeks is listed at 6’0, 190 lbs and he also boasts a 4.4 -40 run time. With Weeks’ exceptional play, he is sure to be a featured player on defense.
Being the humble teammate he is, Jonathan is already looking to his next game, and explained his preparation for Friday.
“I’m staying focused on the next game,” said Weeks “I’m going to treat it like game one, and go out there and perform again.”
The Moorpark Raiders (1-0) travel on the road to Citrus College Friday, Sept. 14, to face the Owls (1-0) at Citrus College at 1 p.m.
