Playing college baseball is extremely difficult. Playing college baseball with multiple sclerosis is beyond imaginable.
However, no matter how difficult the situation becomes, Oxnard College baseball player Nick Gardner only sees the positive in his situation.
It does not matter who doubts him or how painful it is, Gardner, 19, will continue to play baseball as long as it is a possibility. The one interesting fact about Gardner’s situation is that he was not born with this disease, but instead noticed something wrong while working out for baseball season last year.
“It happened last summer while I was lifting weights,” said Gardner. “I am very fortunate it was not much worse.”
Gardner knows that he has been given an opportunity that could very well have been taken away. He plans on taking advantage of every opportunity he has to enjoy his life and baseball.
“I know it could be much worse,” said Gardner. “I am not every going to let it stop me from playing baseball.”
Oxnard head coach John Larson also notices the effort and heart displayed by his player.
“He had to sit out last year,” said Larson. “I am happy to see his is okay and back with the team.”
No matter what the odds against him being successful, Gardner continues to work hard and put his best foot forward.
“I am not going to stop,” said Gardner. “I am not bothered or fazed. I thank God everyday for this opportunity to continuing playing baseball.”
