Oxnard College presented it’s 35th Scholarship Awards Ceremony by giving out 193 scholarships to the campus’ high school, continuing, and transferring students in the new OC Performing Arts Center(OPAC).
These scholarships were given to students to help them with tuition fees, books and educational supplies.
Dr. Richard Duran, Oxnard College President, explained that the members of the OC Foundation were pleased with the student’s efforts in working hard and accomplishing their goals.
“Oxnard College is proud of its history and tradition of excellence and we are proud of each of you,” said Duran. “It is our mission to help you succeed and today we celebrate your success.”
Oxnard College Foundation President, Richard Regnier, explained that the foundation started out 21 years ago with $4000, and eventually rose up to a quarter of million dollars.
He also explained that the foundation gave out $125,000 in scholarships this year, and they donated another $100,000 to the college itself so that they could provide more classes, which would also help retain 25 classes that students need for their majors to go on a 4-year college.
“I am here for the students of Oxnard College,” said Regnier. “I love them and I think this college is one of the greatest examples, nationally, of diversity succeeding on a college campus.”
Connie Owens, event organizer and member of the OC Foundation Scholarship Committee, said the financial support this foundation gives to students is essential, especially with the recession.
“This is an enormous help for students because they need the economic assistance more than ever, because of the budget crisis in California,” said Owens.
Melanie Sierra, a 2010-2011 recipient, said that it is important that students back the OC Scholarship Foundation because it is supporting them to continue their education.
“It’s nice to be able come here and show our appreciation for the people that donated their time and money so that we can have a scholarship,” said Sierra.
A handful of students were also recognized with Academic Excellence Awards at the ceremony.
Dr. Marie Butler, Dept. Chair of Sociology nominated John Garcia, as the recipient of the Academic Excellence Award in Sociology because of his endeavors in community service and humanitarianism.
“I am humbled, grateful and appreciative to have received this award,” said Garcia. “It inspires me to further my education and transfer to a university. Being a part of the Sociology Club, has enabled me to excel and make a difference in my community and this award is an example of that.”
Dr. Linda Kama’ila, Dept. Chair for Anthropology nominated Moriah Jackson, as the recipient of the Academic Excellence Award for Anthropology for her efforts in understanding cultures throughout her travels to Europe.
“I feel great although I didn’t expect Dr. Kama’ila to nominate me,” said Jackson. “I didn’t think anthropology would motivate me like this, so this award definitely validates my efforts.”
Several other students also received Academic Excellence Awards in math, philosophy, science, communication and arts.
Towards the end of the ceremony, Student Activities Adviser, Dennis Marletti, presented the new Associated Student Government board for the 2011-2012 school year to the audience.
Current ASG President, Deserie Mandujano then handed down her presidency to the incoming ASG President, Carlos Gonzalez, Sr.
The festivities continued in the Black Box theatre within the OPAC with light refreshments and food provided by the OC Culinary Arts Department, followed by a dance for all the winners, ASG members and their families.
