Being John Lopreino’s first time directing this play, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” surely did impress with a dramatic set and very talented actors.
Pulling inspiration from the movie, the novel and the play, director Lopreino did a fabulous job in constructing each character and their own personality. The characters were so believable, especially the lead, Damon Daw.
At times it was hard to tell whether he was acting or not. He did a magnificent job portraying and following in the footsteps of such intense previous actors portraying the role like actor Jack Nicholson.
It was also very intriguing how they incorporated the character of Chief Bromden into the play. In the movie he is mute, however in the novel, it is told in first person, from his perspective. They definitely stayed true to the character of Chief Bromden and gave him monologue while allowing his personality to really speak for itself.
The set design and lighting that they developed was stunning and deserves to be mentioned due to the extreme detail that must have gone into designing the set as well as creating the mood for the certain parts of the play.
The set was so meticulously done and nothing was falling apart or done carelessly. It was absolutely one of the best sets that I have seen for a Moorpark College production, let alone a college production. The lighting was also very well done, creating different moods as the play went along.
Overall, the play succeeded in accomplishing its purpose and was very enjoyable. All the actors were very convincing and played the parts well. My only complaint is that it won’t be here long enough! I wish that it would go through the end of the semester, that way students who are busy with midterms the next couple of weeks, had a chance to view it. However it was very well done and recommended to students who want an old fashioned thriller.
