Ahoy, Moorpark College students! It’s time to batten down the hatches, because the theatre arts department is currently holding auditions for the play “Pirates of Penzance,” which is set to premiere on March 13.
Preliminary dance auditions began on Monday, followed by musical auditions today, and callbacks on Wednesday. The auditions on Monday featured some pirate-themed dance rehearsals, with choreographer Beth Megill bringing a lot of enthusiasm to the main stage.
Director John Loprieno has expressed enthusiasm as well. He explained that the play will bring a lot of excitement to Moorpark College, mainly because of the source material it’s based on and the ambitious plans that the set designers have for the stage.
“I’m very excited about the source material,” said Loprieno. “Even though it’s an operata, it’s a whole lot of fun.”
He also explained that he is paying close attention to the singers at these auditions, since the operatic aspect of the play can be very challenging for some singers.
“It’s a style of music that we haven’t done before,” said Loprieno. “Since the music is so difficult, dance takes a secondary position to the singing. Especially for the lead roles.”
A few singers did take the stage on Monday and displayed their vocal prowess, which left Loprieno very impressed. It’s evident that some very talented singers will be featured in this play.
Loprieno also expressed the need for actors who can perform comedic, over-the-top roles.
Lads or lassies who wish to sing and dance like a pirate, or even just wish to know more about this exciting play coming this Spring, should contact Loprieno at [email protected] or visit the Performing Arts Center.
Individuals who are cast in this play must also register for the three-unit Theatre Production: Performance class.
