The “Motion Flux” dance program is back again and will be taking place at the Moorpark College Performing Arts Center on April 23, 24 and 25, showcasing a mix of student and faculty dance pieces.
Program director Robert Salas feels that “Motion Flux” can give the student choreographers some true stage experience.
“The students work really hard for a dance with such a short life,” said Salas. “Though the memories of the performance are there, it will never be the same as that first time. That is how dance is meant to be experienced.”
“Motion Flux” is an annual spring semester dance program, following the fall semester’s “Speaking Movement” program. It showcases five student choreographers and guests from Irvine City College and California State University Channel Islands. The program will consist of dance styles such as tap, modern, contemporary jazz, hip hop and ballet, all dealing with different themes like communicating through other means and life experiences.
The title “Motion Flux” was inspired from the ideas of dance being in flux, or still forming. These ideas have been forming since Jan. 23 when the department started production on the program. Students auditioned to be showcased in the program based on their movement vocabulary and pieces that showed their own voice.
Up until the show’s premiere, the student choreographers have held showings for the department for feedback to ensure their dances run smoothly. Student choreographers include Nathan Burdine, Chris Cevallos, Alena Campagna, Lisa Flory, Stephen Guyette and Elyse Villa. Faculty choreographers include Wendi Baity, Beth Megill, Nancy Paradis and Robert Salas with guest artists CSUCI Dance Ensemble directed by Carinne Rae Bach and Irvine Valley College Dance Ensemble directed by Marie de la Palme.
“Motion Flux” will run April 23, 24 and 25 at 8 p.m. in the Moorpark College Performing Arts Center. Concert tickets are $16. Students/Seniors/Staff are $9.
