As part of the resurgence in vinyl over recent years, the third annual Record Store Day was celebrated on April 17 throughout independent record stores across the United States.
One participating record store was Salzer’s in Ventura. The largest independent record store in Ventura County, Salzer’s offers a wide collection of used and new vinyl as well as CDs, DVDs and Blu-Ray.
As a part of Record Store Day, many bands released exclusive new music only available at participating record stores. Bands such as the Monsters of Folk, Weezer, Against Me! and over 20 more all had rare CDs or vinyl releases for music enthusiasts throughout the county.
One Salzer’s employee, who requested to remain anonymous, worried that some opportunists may take advantage of the event.
“We got this new exclusive ‘Hold Steady’ album, and we only got one and it’s already on ebay for over $200,” he said. “There are some people who will come in and by three of something just so they can sell two of them to take advantage of people.”
But if the crowds of music fans present on Saturday were any indication, scams weren’t on the minds of the attendees. The line was at least three customers long throughout the afternoon, with tons of people crowding the vinyl and exclusive release sections.
One customer, Garret Clark, a 19-year-old Moorpark College student, visits Salzer’s regularly and he is particularly supportive of independent stores.
“With a lot of the big chain stores not carrying vinyl, it’s nice to have a place where everyone loves music,” he said.
Record Store Day was first held in 2008 throughout all independent record stores as a way to draw attention to the dangers of being closed down by bigger chain stores. This year’s Record Store Day has already been called the most successful one to date as far as the exclusive content offered and bands who participated. If the level of support is any indication, independent stores like Salzer’s will be able to keep selling music for some time to come.
