Moorpark’s hit summer comedy “Nice People Dancing to Good Country Music” returns this month for an extended run.
“Nice People” is a heart-warming comedy about the highs and lows of handling a semi-dysfunctional family while running a bar in Houston.
The story revolves around Eva June, who left her husband in Minnesota to run a bar in Texas with her boyfriend, Jim. Jim gets a bit more than he anticipates when Jay Bob, Eva’s 15 year old son, and Catherine, Eva’s niece who has recently been sent on “retreat” from
her convent, come to visit for the summer. Throw in Roy, a local cowboy who becomes deeply enamored with Catherine “even if she is an ex-nun,” and you
have a sure shot at a rip-roaring good time.
In an effort by Moorpark College to save money, the show was only performed Monday-Thursday evenings during the summer. Despite these less than
ideal show times, “Nice People” was very popular during it’s original run.
After it closed, John Loprieno and the Performing Arts Center’s manager, Paulette Cox, couldn’t let the show pass by without the chance to play for a larger audience.
“By reviving a summer show, we¹re able to ‘re-purpose’ (to borrow a word from TV) a production from the summer, give our students a much appreciated
chance to perform again and give the student population on campus another opportunity to enjoy the theatre arts on campus,” said Loprieno. “It’s a rare treat to see our students in action this early in the semester.”
“Nice People” will be performed in the Studio Theatre, the same location during summer performances. The original cast will be returning with the exception of Rachel Borbas, one of the two girls double cast as Catherine. The part will now be played
solely by Stephanie Treible.
The extended run of the show will play Sept. 10-12 and 17-19 at 8 p.m.
with matinees Sept 13 & 20 at 2p.m. In addition, the show will include two Wednesday matinees on Sept 9 & 16, free of charge to students. Although tickets are free, if you are interested in attending one of these special performances, you can make a reservation at the box office.
Tickets can be purchased online at www.moorpark.edu/pac or at the Box Office
