The spirit and sound of the lord came to Oxnard College with a spiritual concert organized by a renowned gospel singer.
Diana Morris, who has organized and performed in various other gospel choirs in Memphis and Los Angeles, was invited by the OC Black Educator’s Association to perform a Gospel Concert at the student lounge Tuesday at 1 p.m.
Angela Timmons and Debra Young assisted Morris on the keyboard.
“There were more gospel artists at this performance compared to last year when we had six vocalists come for Black History month at OC campus”, said Oxnard College counselor Emma Waits.
The 10 singers from four different churches performed nine songs “of the good news” as Waits introduced them at the after-lunch performance.
“These were negro spirituals sung at all occasions that we now call gospel music,” Waits said. “The words of these songs contained messages that comforted and inspired the black people through the times of hardship.”
“I liked all the songs,” said Professor Kitty Merrill with Oxnard College Television. “Juan Turner, who is an OC student, did a great job in leading ‘Oh Happy Days.'”
After the performance Waits introduced the members of the OC Black Educator’s Association who were present.
“We end Black History Month celebrations with a concert,” Waits said. “But we were not able to schedule it last February so we did it this week in March.”
