Moorpark College students passing through the Administration Building may notice some new art decorating the walls near the Student Business Office.
The featured work is a series titled Metropolitan Times by Los Angeles based artist Miriam Noske.
“A source of inspiration, in terms of imagery and so forth, is the L.A. environment,” said Noske.
The gallery opened Sept. 8 and will be featured through Sept. 26. There will be an artist lecture on Sept. 22 from 3 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. in Fountain Hall, room 115.
Noske’s work is inspired by multiple facets of the city landscape. Using the architecture as a mirror, she transforms her canvas into the images she sees reflecting from the glass of the buildings throughout downtown.
With her background in film photography, she uses photos and sketches as her starting point to recreate the geometric patterns, transparency of colors and the way the landscape changes through different times of the day.
Her work is also infused with images of advertisements that span the sides of buildings in New York and Los Angeles.
“I’ll travel to New York occasionally and I like how the landscape is interspersed with media images,” said Noske.
Miriam is captivated by the grid like layout of the city and styles her work in geometric patterns that emulate it.
Her work is a combination of abstract and representational art.
“I like to take something from reality and transform it and have it abstract later on,” said Noske.
Noske has multiple art degrees from universities and art institutes around the world and finds inspiration from many artists, some of which include: Piet Mondrian, Sarah Morris, James Rosenquist and Claude Monet. Her work has been shown in exhibits in Bangkok, Germany, Vienna, Cleveland and Los Angeles.
Metropolitan Times will be on display until Sept. 26 in the Moorpark College Gallery located in the Administration Bldg. (A). Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
