The Associated Students of Moorpark College presented their 10th annual student talent show to a full audience on Feb. 1. The show was hosted by Moorpark College alumni and magician/comedian, Yuri Drell, who has performed at big-name venues like the San Diego Convention Foundation and the Arena Club.
Moorpark College students showed off their talents ranging from a full on opera performance by Omar Landverde to playing “My Heart will Go On” by blowing through your hands like a flute by Joe Rivera.
The atmosphere backstage was tense as they all prepared to go on stage.
“I’m not nervous,” said Kevin Nam, student at Moorpark College. “I like being the center of attention.”
Nam won the talent show last year with his unique dance style originating from the pop and lock technique more commonly referred to as the “robot”.
Other students were more nervous about their performance.
“I’m a bag of nerves right now,” said Nostalghia, musician and student at Moopark College.
The judging panel consisted of two students from Moorpark College and one professor, John Baker. Professor Baker was chosen to judge for receiving the distinguished chair award last semester. The two students, Justin Klass and Raeann McGriff were chosen to judge for their involvement in the school and community.
There was a variety of talents throughout the show. Tribal Solstice performed their belly dance routine which was soon followed by a Olga Galchenko’s juggling routine.
The first place price of $250 dollars was awarded to Samantha M. Townsend for her comedic singing routine about a girl who’s in love with boy from Starbucks.
She was shocked that she won.
“It’s all very surreal,” said Townshend. “I don’t really remember anything except balloons falling down.”
Second place was awarded to the Moorpark Swing Dance Club and third place was given to Landverde for his opera piece.
The Associated Student Body of Moorpark College is expected to hold another talent show next year.
