Getting up in front of a group and giving a speech may be one the most terrifying experiences for many, but as a spectator it is considerably less horrific. Students will be able to attend, observe and be encouraged to improve their speech skills at Oxnard College’s speech tournament on Dec. 2.
The event will cover informative and persuasive speeches, as well as oral interpretation. The tournament will begin at 2 p.m. with an introduction by organizing Speech Instructor Amy London, followed by the first round, a tabulation, and the final round. Speech students will have the opportunity to “show what they’ve learned” according to London.
Nurse and Chair of the Speech Department Mary Jones will be one of the judges for the tournament, and says that she has always enjoyed her position. “I love attending the speech contest, it is always an uplifting experience,” said Jones.
This will be an opportunity for students to get involved with student life, as well as to face a common challenge for many. London feels that some participants will see that even though they are afraid to give speeches, they will see that it is possible and easier than they might have thought. This will be the first of two annual speech tournaments held once per semester.
The Oxnard College student government is promoting the event to encourage new students to come see what the tournament is all about. Having experienced the tournament before, London stresses it will “empower students” to try public speech and conquer their fears. The speech will be held in the Liberal Arts building forum, room A-6 at Oxnard College.
Refreshments will be served. For more information, contact London at [email protected], or at (805) 986-5800, x1943.
