If you have any free time you’d like to fill, there is likely to be a club on campus that suits your interests. The Clubs of Moorpark College are diverse, unique and serve a multitude of purposes.
Many clubs are involved with Charities, Religion and the environment, whereas others focus on more specific causes.
If you’re an athlete, you can work out with the Track and Field Club. If you’ve got a passion for equality, you can fight for a cause with clubs like the Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA).
Sally Ponce O’Rourke the co-adviser of the GSA said the GSA’s mission statement is, “a club created for people…to come together to prevent homophobia and transphobia in schools and to provide education about the LGBT Community and spreading the word of equal rights.”
There are many clubs that you can join at Moorpark College; the purposes and beliefs of these clubs are as diverse as the people of Moorpark College. You can join clubs that can help in your academic pursuits or clubs with moral prerogatives whether they are religious, environmental, communal, or social. There are even clubs that can keep you physically active.
There are clubs that emphasize certain types of majors and academics like the Creative Writing Association, the Math Science and Engineering Club, and the Political Science Club.
If you are religious or interested in learning more about a specific religion, there are a number of clubs, which cater to different faiths such as the Baha’i Club, Jewish Student’s Association, The Campus Crusade for Christ, The Latter Day Saints Student Organization, and the Muslim Students Association.
Some of the clubs can help you stay fit and active, like the Track and Field Club. There are also two different clubs that focus on different types of dance, the In-Motion and Swing Dance Clubs.
There are also broader clubs like the Environmental Club, which hold events to improve the environment, as well as clubs like R.O.C.K. (Reaching Out to Communities with Kindness), which works directly with the community.
The purpose of R.O.C.K. goes well with the “Year of Service” theme this year as its purpose is as a social club that serves charitable organizations.
Mackenzie Fuller the director of Student Organizations for the Associated Students said, “We could have More Clubs… there are clubs trying to form. A World Students, A Geology club, and a Philosophy club.”
If you have any interest in forming a new club you can speak with the Associated Students. All you need to be eligible are four Members and an adviser. Applications should be in by October 1st.
All of these clubs are great for getting involved in the lively student life at Moorpark College and can help you learn something new, or cement what you already know and love. For a full list of clubs offered at Moorpark College visit the Associated Students office, located next to the cafeteria.
