The Oxnard College Condors took an early lead against the Moorpark College Raiders minutes into the first half. Although the Raiders narrowed the lead several times, it wasn’t enough—OC held out for a 87-77 victory.
During the second half of the intense game, the Raiders brought the score within 4 points several times, but the Condors were too hot to handle and continued to extend their lead with dominant plays.
The Condors’ record now stands at 10-6 for the season and they are currently undefeated
in Western State Conference play with a record of 2-0. The Raiders fell to 2-1 losing their undefeated streak in conference play; their record stands at 7-10 for the overall season.
Marcus Falley, a 19-year-old psychology major at OC, had a dominating performance scoring 13 points in both halves and making 5 of 6 free-throws for 31 points in total.
“I try to play hard every game,” said Falley. “I was feeling it tonight, teammates pass to me morewhen I’m feeling it. Everyone on the team played hard.”
Falley attributed the Condors’ victory to everyone’s collective effort and listed off nearly his entire team, detailing their contributions.
Raiders’ Assistant Coach Dan Wendt, however, said that he was the Raiders’ defense’s biggest issue and he elaborated on the goal for the rest of the Raiders season.
“To come out every game and play one hundred percent for all 40 minutes,” said Wendt.
Head Basketball Coach for the Condors, Jason Cummingham, thought the Raiders’ speed would be the biggest obstacle to overcome during the game and was proud of his team’s determination.
“(We) buckled down in the second half,” said Cunningham. “(We) keep improving every game, so if we get the opportunity to compete in the playoffs they’ll be ready.”
The Raiders’ Coltrane Powdrill was named Western State Conference (North) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 10, due to his remarkable 42 points, 3 steals, 2 rebounds, and 4 assists during two games. Powdrill made four for four in freethrows and scored 17 points during the game.
The Raiders play again Jan. 19 against Allan Hancock College in the Raiders Pavilion.
