Moorpark College’s Lt. Greg Beckley has always been dedicated to preserving safety wherever he goes.
Beckley helps stop crimes from happening on campus and teaches students to follow the law and stay out of trouble.
“I enjoy the ability to interact as well as mentor and train young people, and improve the safety on campus,” said Beckley.
As the top law-enforcer of Moorpark College, Beckley supervises all other sworn officers and campus cadets. He also oversees the operations of the police at Moorpark College, which is a division of the Ventura Community College District Police Department commanded by Chief of Police Richard DeLaO.
Moorpark College President Dr. Bernard Luskin said that having a lieutenant as experienced as Beckley makes him feel safer on campus.
“He’s extremely well-trained and capable,” said Luskin. “I feel both pleased to have him on staff and he makes me feel secure.”
Beckley, who was born and raised in Los Angeles, joined the LAPD as an officer when he was twenty-two. While working there, Beckley went up through the ranks and became a detective coordinator, the highest rank you can achieve as a detective.
During his time as detective coordinator, Beckley was part of a case that involved a murder suspect that was found in Somalia, captured in Egypt by the FBI, and extradited to Los Angeles.
Beckley left the LAPD in 2009 where at the time, he was in charge of a narcotics enforcement unit in South Los Angeles.
“It was a very active position with long hours and a lot of arrests,” Beckley said.
However, Beckley wasn’t ready to stop doing what he loved to do.
“I wasn’t really ready to stop working,” said Beckley. “I wanted something where I could make an impact, to make a difference.”
In 2004, Beckley met with former VCCCD Chief of Police Jim Bobin for a position as a lieutenant, but was not able to leave the LAPD at the time. However, Beckley told Bobin that if another job became available he would accept, as he did four years later.
“A [lieutenant] position at Oxnard College opened up in 2008 that also coincided with my retirement date,” Beckley said.
Beckley became part of the VCCCD Police Department as a lieutenant in April 2009. He was first assigned to Oxnard College as that school’s lieutenant. In 2011, he was reassigned as the lieutenant at both Moorpark College and Ventura College. In the spring of 2012, a sergeant was hired for Ventura College to work with the Chief of Police Richard DeLaO, allowing Beckley to concentrate solely on Moorpark College.
