Success through Diversity club members raised more than $1,000 during a two-week span leading up to Valentine’s Day.
The campus club for students with disabilities sold flower bouquets made out of Hershey Kisses for $1 each.
“This is one of the most successful active clubs on campus,” said Nancy Lathan, Disabled Students Service Program coordinator.
Success through Diversity also participated in the Think Pink breast cancer awareness events at VC, selling 200 of the Kisses bouquets at the Ventura vs. Moorpark basketball game. They donated half of their proceeds that day to the Ribbons for Life Foundation, a nonprofit organization that spreads awareness about breast cancer.
Holly Ramsey, known as “Mom” to students throughout the Educational Assistance Center, spoke of her fondness for the students who are disabled and those who are part of Success through Diversity.
“They are good students,” she said. “They work hard and they’re good kids. I’m proud of them.”
About 1,200 disabled students are enrolled at Ventura College, a jump from the 1,100 enrolled last year.
Daniel Barringer, 20, a two-year VC student and member of Success through Diversity, spoke about the purpose of the club and some of the things club members are trying to achieve.
“We talk about ways that we can provide awareness for disabled students,” Barringer said. For example, if a student is not able to get to school through normal transportation, they catch a cab and the program pays for it, Barringer said. The fundraiser also provides money to help students pay for books.
“Nancy makes sure we stay organized,” Barringer said.
This program allows the disabled to know that they can do the same things that people with no disabilities can do, Barringer said.
Success through Diversity meets in the ASVC room Friday at 12:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend the meetings, Barringer said. “Come join us, disabled or not.”
