Moorpark College students explored clubs during Club Days on Oct. 29 and 30.Club Days, which began on Tuesday and continued into Wednesday, drew students to Moorpark College’s Raider Walk. Students were able to speak with representatives from 27 Moorpark College clubs and student organizations.
The event provided students with an opportunity to talk with representatives and sign up for clubs.
“I was interested mainly in seeing what all the [clubs] are about,” said engineering major Angad Gill. “There’s so many people here, and sometimes you’re attracted to large crowds of people.”
Director of Student Organizations Victoria Zolfaghari reported that the club representatives that she spoke to found the event to be a success.
“Everyone had a positive turnout and experience both days,” said Zolfaghari. “Within the first day several organizations were able to recruit anywhere between 25 and 80 new interested members.”
For Associated Students President Andrew Brown, Club Days is primarily about publicity.
“A lot of people don’t know what clubs we have, [or] don’t know we have clubs,” said Brown. “Having tables out there is a good way of having the students see something physical, tangible.”
For Brown, Club Day occurring on two consecutive days meant allowing as many students as possible to get involved on campus.
“It’s great to get all the people who don’t come on the other day,” said Brown.
For clubs that promote causes, Club Days had a two-fold effect, as explained by business major and Spectrum Club representative Sean Kohalmy.
“I think that for a lot of clubs, Club Days is about increasing attendance,” said Kohalmy. “For us, it’s about raising awareness.”
Many clubs used demonstrations or giveaways to draw students to their tables. Demonstrations included Engineering Club’s robot ghost and EATM’s kissing llama, Valentina.
For some, like Math Club representatives Mark Desai and Ryan Whitaker, Club Days had less impact.
“We get as many people as we would without [Club Days],” said Whitaker.
“If your club’s flashy then Club [Days] is the best,” said Desai.
For President Brown, Club Days is not only a valuable resource for information, but also a fun event and an opportunity for networking.
“I think overall I like meeting people,” said Brown. “Club Day is a really good day to meet people and get information.”
