Big business jobs would be nothing without their interns, but interns know their responsibilities are far beyond what is presumably required. Coffee and trash runs give you the opportunity to be a fly on the wall, learn the ins and outs of what a company is really all about, and gather a few embarrassing moments. This confessional serves to give an outlet to the flies and their stories.
Fly #1: Flash flood, RUN!
Water was pouring everywhere and was already up to our ankles when the fire department arrived to shut off the main water line. Myself and the people I interned for were throwing all the product from the showroom to a safe area.
For the internship, I had applied online and was hired after two interviews with the head of the company. Social Hill, is a product placement firm, that aims at associating brands with celebrities through gifting suites.
Social Hill’s offices are located at the heart of hollywood on Santa Monica blvd, where they have their private showroom for celebrity gift suites. Products are stored here, ranging from thousand dollar skin care lines to electronics.
During my second month interning, I was carrying a ladder from the front of the offices to the storage room. Little did I realize that the overhead fire sprinklers were being slowly tapped by the ladder. Until I lifted the ladder up a little more, in an effort to maintain balanced, and it knocked one off completely.
The woman who hired me as her intern was Adrine Adeassan, who said, “As I rushed downstairs to see what all the noise was about, I found my employees covered in black water.”
At first the water was dark as soot but soon after turned a light gray. “I thought it was fuel, so I ran out of the building,” said marketing director, Sabina Faubel. Later, a firefighter who answered the call, said the reason was because the water had been sitting in the pipes.
Although water truly rushed everywhere, we were able to save all of the electronics. However, some of the shoes were ruined.
“Although it took us by surprise,” said Adeassan, “it was a blessing in disguise.” Due to my mishap, we completely renovated the offices and transformed it to a showroom with class.
I came in after intern hours, and helped repaint the place. I remember thinking I am going to fail this internship but in reality it’s what landed me one of my jobs. After the internship, I was hired on as a celebrity gift suite host. I guess it really was a blessing.
