The stage is starting to look pretty bright now that the Moorpark drama program has began rehearsals for “One Acts.” Written by students for students, the show is to open with an original perspective reflecting the lives of college students.
The show runs for two weeks, from Dec. 1-5 and Dec. 8-9, and will feature 11 plays split into two bills of performances.
Co-Director, Chris Guerrero, feels that “One Acts” is not an underrated high school play but one that will bring on a new intensity to student drama performances.
“High school plays don’t show full potential,” said Guerrero. “‘One Acts’ represents us as students and what we actually think about. It brings together multiple themes and messages, rather than just a story.”
Though expected to encourage audiences to reconsider certain ideas, “One Acts” has had its own effect on the actors and directors themselves.
Jessie Bruno, one of the play’s directors, has felt the influence of being involved with “One Acts.”
“It’s really a good growing experience, emotionally and as a director for dealing with people,” said Bruno. “We gain constructive criticism from our peers and work through that.”
“One Acts” gives students the opportunity direct their compositions.
Christopher Campbell, a director and writer, knows how this process can be challenging and rewarding for performers and directors.
“I get to flex my director muscles, but some find it hard to take directions from a peer,” said Campbell. “It can be very stressful but it’s fulfilling; totally worth it.”
