The Moorpark College baseball team put on an offensive show in a 13-2 win over East Los Angeles College Tuesday afternoon.
The Raiders (3-2-1) slugged 13 runs on 15 hits, and all nine starters had at least one hit on the day.
Alexander Birgel started things off for the Raiders in the bottom of the third, with a little small ball on a bunt single and two straight stolen bases to put him on third. A grounder to second was all the Raiders needed to bring outfielder Alexander Birgel home to take a 1-0 lead.
The Huskies (4-6) battled back in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs on only one hit off Raiders’ starter Matt Montgomery, who had a trouble locating the strike zone after issuing four walks and two wild pitches in the inning.
The Raiders fought right back with their bats in the bottom of the fourth, scoring six runs which proved to be the deciding factor in the Raiders’ victory.
The Raiders even added insult to injury by scoring two more runs in the fifth and sixth inning.
Montgomery tossed a solid five innings of work for the Raiders, giving up the only two four hits, six walks while striking out four in his second win of the year.
Birgel led the way for the Moorpark College bats as one of five Raiders’ to have a multi-hit game, going 2 for 5 with three runs, two RBI’s and four stolen bases.
Raider Head Coach Mario Porto said that his team’s success on offense was unexpected but he was glad to see all his players contribute to the win.
“That was exciting,” said Porto. “I can’t say I foresaw us hitting the ball like that but it was exciting to watch our guys play so well especially going against East L.A.’s bullpen.”
