People can achieve many goals in the span of only two years. Many can get a college degree, or maybe even get married, but Franco Mego and Scott Langdon achieved something a little less conventional in just a two-year span of time. During that time, the two Moorpark College students created their own clothing line called, We are the Creation.
What started as a trip to Vans Warped Tour in the summer of 2010 led to the inspiration for starting a clothing business for Franco Mego. The 20-year-old business major was motivated to create his own clothing business after seeing bass player, Jaxin Hall, from Of Mice of Men, have his own clothing line at Warped Tour.
“I thought it was really cool he was doing his own clothing line and it inspired me to as well,” said Mego.
To help start the company, Franco recruited his good friend, Moorpark College student Scott Langdon, also 20. They had common goals with starting a clothing business because they were picky on what type of clothing they were going to create. They wanted to come up with something that they would wear, down to the smallest details.
The duo was extremely determined to get their business up and going. They met frequently to discuss finances, design options, shirt styles, quality and current trends. Their hard work paid off when a design was selected, the website was launched, and they were able to successfully ship the shirts.
The demographic the clothing line aims to target is mainly for males who are 13-25 years old. Langdon thought it was a good idea that the clothing would be geared to not just teens and adults but preteens as well.
“Kids are what drive clothing lines.” he said. “It was a smart way for us to go.”
“We are the Creation” was the selected name for the business because of the multiple ways the word “create” could be used. The different meanings could be interpreted in a variety of ways, explained Mego.
“You create art, you create music,” he said, “You create your own happiness.”
We are the Creation are $20 unisex, cotton t-shirts printed on high quality American Apparel shirts. The tops come in two colors: black and grey, and range from size small to large.
The most unique thing about the brand is that the design isn’t set in stone. It is always changing. Mego and Langdon believe in creating limited edition products.
“Whatever catches people’s attention deserves to be on our shirts,” said Langdon.
The two founders of the company mainly handle all the operations for the business, though they do receive some help from friends. Willy He manages the website while Daniel Alvarada, does the photographs of friends who model the tops at different locations. The pals are all volunteering their time and support to make the line a reality.
We are the Creation hopes to expand and become a thriving business. As of right now Mego and Langdon aren’t in it for profit. It’s something they enjoy doing so they continue with hopes that it will pay off in the future.
“I don’t want to work for anyone,” said Mego. “I want to do this for a living, I want to be my own boss.” he said.
Langdon agreed with Mego and added that he hoped to open their own store up in a year or so. The next step for the duo in the future is to possibly set up a tent at the music festival Coachella and sell their shirts to fans and maybe inspire some of them, just as Mego was once inspired.
