Oxnard College and the Associated Student Government embrace patriotism with a week long dedication starting this Monday to commemorate our Constitution, fallen heroes, and those who continue to fight for our freedoms.
This occasion has been titled “Remembrance Week” because it will focus on remembering the past, present and looking forward to the future of this nation’s history.
“This week will allow us to remember why we have our freedoms as citizens,” said Deserie Mandujano, ASG president. “We should be grateful not as individuals, but together, and celebrate how we got here as a country.”
The week will kick off on Sept. 13 with a special dedication to the victims of “9/11”. It will continue on Sept.14 with “Military Appreciation Day” and end with “Constitution Day” on Sept. 16. These events will all take place at the amphitheater near the student lounge.
This tribute will be an opportunity to honor men and women of the Armed Forces for their service. This will also be an opportunity to learn more about the Constitution and the repercussions of 9/11.
Michele Nolan, a 26-year-old sociology major, will speak about her experiences as a soldier in the military.
“I want to share my experience because it was an interesting place to be,” explained Nolan. “I was starting my life as a soldier on the day America was attacked – 9/11.”
There will be a moment of silence observed at 9:30 a.m. on Sep 13. In addition, there will be a couple of special guest speakers for the ASG Live session from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.
Throughout the week, a collection of goods for the troops who are serving overseas will be taken. There will also be face and body painting. A raffle, memory tiles, and voter registration cards will also be offered.
Anna VanderStouwe, ASG Senate Chair and a 23-year-old political science major will be among those participating in the event.
“As a student, it’s important to be involved in more than the typical daily walk-through of life,” said VanderStouwe. “This event has so much to do with our country and what it should mean to us. It would be ludicrous not to participate.”
