Students at Ventura, Oxnard and Moorpark colleges are returning to find fewer class offerings this semester.
Counselors district-wide noted a lack of open classes.
“There are classes that are open, it may not be the class of choice, but it will still get you started,” said Ralph Smith, Oxnard counseling chair. “We’re pretty locked up right now.”
Although many classes have been waitlisted or closed altogether, counselors remind students there is still space available in some classes. The reason for the decreased number of classes is the state legislature’s inability to pass a budget by the July 1 deadline making it impossible for the district to make a budget.
Corey Wendt, Moorpark counseling chair reminds students to keep an eye out for any open classes for general education courses.
“Look at those open classes and see if there’s something they could get into to get going with their general education,” Wendt said. “Some of the other things they could do if they’re not sure what they’re going to be majoring in or studying, take a look at taking one of the self-paced career assessment classes or they can look at taking a college strategies class.”
The California budget provisions count for $4500 per-student attending full-time.
According to Claire Geisen, director of administrative relations for the district, the district has reduced Fall class offerings, laid off classified staff and reduced hours of operation.
“Our decisions are anchored on the college missions, provide the right courses for transfer or for career-training so students can complete as quickly as possible,” said Geisen. “In moving students efficiently through college, we create capacity for the next group waiting at the door.”
Beartriz Hernandez, counseling chair at Ventura College advises waitlisted students to consult their teacher about getting into the class.
“Many students don’t show up the first week for various reasons,” Hernandez said. “I recommend they don’t give up and speak to their teachers.”
Wendt reminds students to be ready and plan for next semester.
“The biggest thing for students to keep in mind is the next semester will start in January, but the registration will start in November,” said Wendt.
