The flu bug is once again upon us!
But not to worry. The Moorpark College Student Health Center is offering flu shots to students at $20.
The Health Center is promoting getting the flu shot to students. One advocate of the shot is coordinator of Student Health Services Sharon Manakas, who advises students that the best way to prevent the flu is to receive the vaccination.
“My advice is to get it and protect yourself and protect others,” said Manakas
Many individuals every year are affected with the flu. The immunization is an essential way for students to avoid contracting the flu. The virus can be a very serious illness that can keep students from attending class or going to work. The shot is recommended to everyone who has not previously suffered an allergic reaction from the shot. The shot however is not the only way to prevent getting sick this season, students can take many other precautions to prevent developing the flu.
“The biggest thing to do is good hand washing, dispose of tissues, and avoid drinking out of other peoples cups, as well as if you do get sick to stay home,” said Manakas.
Students are highly susceptible to the flu do to the fact they are frequently in crowded areas and are constantly interacting with a lot people.
However, even though a student receives the shot they should take all measures to prevent the flu.
Chelsey Fernandez, 20, sociology major, does not plan on getting the vaccination this year but does believe students need to make sure to prepare for the flu season.
“Just by dressing warm if it is cold and washing hands whenever possible,” said Fernandez.
The flu shot supply in the Heath Center does run out almost every year. The health center urges students to get it while it is still available. Even if you do develop flu like symptoms and have not received the shot you are encouraged to still visit the health center where they can help you.
Jen Brown, 17, business major has already decided she will be getting a flu shot at some point and finds it to be a good way to stay healthy.
“My mom is a doctor and probably would want me to get a flu shot,” said Brown
Students looking to get the flu vaccine through the Moorpark College Heath Center are asked to make an appointment. Students walking in without an appointment may have a lengthy wait. Appointments can be made by calling (805)378-1413.
