Former Oxnard College ASG Senator Anthony Garnatz has resigned his position after facing numerous charges of non-participation from the Associated Student Government at OC.
The ASG accused Garnatz of not fulfilling his obligations, saying Garnatz did not live up to the duties he was required to perform as a senator.
Garnatz alleges that his resignation was forced, claiming that the ASG was “bullying” him out of his position.
Garnatz said that the ASG claimed he failed to participate in ASG activities, including Jafra Baskets, Scary Movie Night, the Toy Joy Drive and countless others. Garnatz said the allegations are unfounded.
The ASG in an email said that Garnatz had been had presented with a list of charges alleging his actions had violated the ASG Bylaws and that he could have responded to the charges before resigning.
“The initial stage of this process allows ample opportunity for Mr. Garnatz to submit a response to these charges for clarification or additional information to be presented before these issues were presented to the remaining board for discussion/action,” said OC ASG in an email. “Mr. Garnatz chose not to contest the charges and resigned.”
Garnatz said in an email to a Student Voice reporter that the allegations were unfounded. He answered each one, detailing his level of participation.
“As for the ‘Scary Movie Night,’ I did not participate in the actual movie screening; due to the fact I had personal matters,” Garnatz wrote. “However, Peter (Salazar, Public Relations Officer) made small flyers, which I believe were 3 by 3, and I distributed them throughout to the campus.”
Garnatz countered in another email that the ASG is not focusing on important issues.
“It saddens me that our student government didn’t focus on real issues like the bullying of our gay and lesbian students, or our schools dropout rate, or the lack of flow of information, such as setting up forums to educate students on our budget predicament, ” stated Garnatz.
OC ASG countered that Garnatz had not brought up these issues to the board.
“Issues of gay and lesbian students were never brought to the board’s attention by Mr. Garnatz, nor any member of the student body,” stated OC Secretary Raul Pulido in an email. “In the past, ASG has hosted several budget forums specifically for students with President (Richard) Duran and Vice President John al-Amin to inform students on budget issues. ASG was part of an information session hosted by Dean (Karen) Engelsen to address information dissemination on campus and continues to work with the administration on this issue.”
