Moorpark College Women’s Basketball extends its winning streak to five-in-a-row in dominating fashion, cruising to a 65-46 victory over Taft College.
MC came into the second half with a 13-point lead on Taft and began to take charge extending the margin to 17 points. They found their groove behind point guard Sidney Dobner, who led MC with 24 points, 10 rebounds, 6 steals and 5 assists.
“Someone needed to step up, but not just one person stepped up,” said Dobner about MC coming together for their fifth straight victory. “We all did, and when we stepped up defensively, that’s what carried us offensively.”
Taft was on a comeback though, with six minutes remaining, cutting MC’s lead to 8 points and putting the Raider’s on warning. At least until forward Irene Lopez’s solid defense came through to set up a clutch 3-pointer deep in the wing from Guard Dobner putting MC back up by 11.
MC never let go from then on, bringing their lead back up to 17-points and beyond.
Lopez commented on her team coming together to make sure MC grabbed its fifth straight win.
“Someone had to go out there and play better defense,” said Lopez. “Everyone picked up and we finished way stronger then we started.”
Lopez finished with 4 points, 2 rebounds and 4 blocks.
Guards Deepika Kapil and Chelsea Smith contributed to MC’s 40 boards with 8 rebounds each.
Kapil also had 7 points, 4 assists, 2 steals and was 1 of 3 from the three-point line.
Deepika is one of the three captains MC has including Lopez and Dobner.
After the game she commented on her team coming together as their 17-point lead began to slip away.
” When they start catching up, we just pull together and get a stop on our defensive end and execute to pull it out for the win,” said Kapil.
Coach Lindsay Goldblatt of MC believes in her team, but doesn’t let the success of five wins in a row go to the team’s head.
“We realize we haven’t done anything yet, it’s just five games, I think it has a lot to do with the depth we have in the bench and our athleticism, which allows us to keep going,” said Goldblatt. “When we can’t look to our stars, we can look to our bench, which is always good to have.”
MC’s attempt at six-in-a-row was cut short by number one ranked College of the Canyons, losing a hard fought battle 73-63. MC hosts its annual Moorpark College Classic Friday through Sunday Dec. 10-12.
