New technological milestones are on the rise and recently the question has been raised if students would prefer to read on a screen or to continue reading on paper.
New devices like the e-book reader are attracting students and readers by having the access of purchasing novels, news, and even text books all in electronic text.
E-chapters make it possible for students to purchase chapters from text books individually. By purchasing text electronically you are able to purchase, read, and print only what you need. In addition to saving money, you would be saving the environment by reducing paper usage.
Nikki Miller, a 21-year-old nursing major at Moorpark College, says that she would prefer to still read her text books on paper, but would love to read her favorite novels electronically with the new e-book readers.
“I do not like the idea of buying each chapter online,” said Miller. “I would rather buy the textbook, that way I would have all of the chapters with me at all times.”
“I can easily flip through pages, I would also have the pictures and graphs that I like to see in books, and one picture or graph can make all the difference in understanding what you are trying to learn.”
Students have the capability of having their entire bookshelf in the palm of their hands as they go through their day. People are able to access their favorite novels and they won’t have to deal with their books aging over time.
Most e-chapters can be purchased on line at the low price of only $1.99 per chapter. If you are one who still enjoys reading on paper you are capable of printing your e-chapters from your home printer.
With the capabilities the new e-book reader have in store for society, the relevance of local bookstores has become a topic for students who enjoy coming together and finding a relaxing atmosphere to talk, read, and study.
It has been announced that Thousand Oaks’ Borders Bookstore will soon be closing. An employee at the store says that students are able to purchase several books and even textbooks right in the store. When students purchase them in the bookstore they are able to upload them right there to their e-book readers.
“Now everything is computerized and people are going to the Internet to buy their books,” said one bookstore staff employee, remaining anonymous.
Unemployment in California is fluctuating every month and right now is a vital time where students are struggling to save every penny.
Ventura College student, Bernnedette Medina, 21, Psychology major, believes in time to come most college students will be catching on to e-chapters and e-texts.
“I would totally want to purchase e-chapters online,” said Medina. “Sometimes the bookstore won’t even buy back a book that I spent at least $100 on.”
Whether students will want to change their reading customs will be up to them and what they prefer.
“I can see the majority of new college students purchasing e-book readers,” said Medina. “But then there are always going to be those students who like the traditional ways of reading a book.”
