The Oxnard College Condors were able to hang on and win 10-7 in an offensive battle over the visiting Moorpark College Raiders on Monday.
This was the second game of a back-to-back for the Western States Conference North rivals. After winning the first match-up 15-0, Moorpark was unable to keep up with the offensive output of Oxnard College.
After the win Oxnard climbs to 6-11 overall and 2-4 in conference, while Moorpark falls to 8-9 overall and 4-2 in conference.
Moorpark jumped out to the early 3-0 lead on Oxnard, but Oxnard would continue to push on. Finally, with the game tied at five in the sixth inning, Oxnard was finally able to put together a streak of runs that Moorpark would not recover from. Oxnard went on to score four runs in the sixth inning, pushing them ahead for good.
Neither starting pitcher had a great game, both giving up over five earned runs each. Once Oxnard was able to take the lead, Moorpark would not be able to score any more runs off of their bullpen.
Oxnard catcher Zach McDonald stood out offensively, helping lead his team to victory with a big day at the plate.
“I just looked fastball and adjusted,” said McDonald. “I knew they also would throw me inside.”
Oxnard Head Coach John Larson was also happy to see his team bounce back from a forgettable 15-0 loss to Moorpark on Saturday. He was also happy to see his players doing better at bats.
“We got our foot down early,” said Larson. “We were not picking up the curveball Saturday. We were seeing pitches better today. We were also more aggressive.”
Oxnard first baseman Tim Johnston also stood out offensively; going 2 for 3 with a couple runs batted in for his team.
Moorpark will return home to take on the WSC North conference leading the Cuesta Cougars, while Oxnard will head up north to play at their biggest rival Ventura College.
