Aaron Landeros hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to score Scott McNally from second and give Oxnard College a 4-3 win over Ventura at home Tuesday afternoon.
McNally hit a one-out double to the gap in right center to get the Condors started in the bottom of the ninth inning. After Jake Mahan was intentionally walked, the Condors fouled out for the second out in the inning.
Landeros then stepped up to the plate and took the first pitch he saw into right field. Pirates right fielder Joseph Luna made a good throw to the plate, but McNally was able to dislodge the ball from Pirate catcher Ryan Morozowski’s mitt as he applied the tag and McNally was safe, giving the Condors the win.
Condors pitcher Corey McElliot pitched a full nine innings and was able to get the job done when his team needed him to.
“I was just trying my best to maintain my composure from start to finish,” said McElliot.
The Condors (14-5, 7-0 WSC) were able to manufacture a run in the bottom of the second inning to get on the board first. Mahan led off the inning with an infield single before being moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt. Landeros and outfielder Luis Andrade then delivered back-to-back singles to score Mahan and give the Condors a 1-0 advantage.
That lead did not last long, however, as the Pirates (6-10, 2-6) responded with three runs in the top half of the third. Albert Squires led off with a walk and Ryan Jones followed with a single up the middle.
A walk to Jeremy Dann loaded the bases and a walk to Marcus Way walked in a run to tie the game at one. A groundout and fielder’s choice allowed Jones and Dann to score later in the inning and put the Pirates ahead, 3-1.
The Condors fought back in the bottom of the fifth though to knot the game at three after Brad Greve led off the inning with a triple. A groundout scored Greve to cut the lead to one, and Nate Rushing tied the game at 3 with a home run over the left-field wall.
Neither team was able to break the tie until the ninth inning when Landeros delivered a clutch hit to keep the Condors undefeated in conference play.
