As the brand new stage was set for Taking Back Sunday, the contemporary rock band proved to the audience at Club Nokia that rock can be reborn.
On Nov. 13, following the two opening bands 3oh!3 and The International Noise Conspiracy, Club Nokia introduced its first rock band.
A brand new venue since Nov. 9, Club Nokia is a sister venue to the larger Nokia Theatre, both hosted in the L.A. Live complex across the street from the Staples Center.
Warming up the audience with “You Know How I Do” from their debut album “Tell All Your Friends” in 2002, the lyrics “So sick, so sick of being tired / And oh so tired of being sick” were reminiscent of the anticipation that the fans have held for a new album.
During the show, the band played some of their songs that will be introduced in their upcoming album “New Again,” which held a greater melancholy tone than their latest album in 2006, “Louder Now.”
Lead vocalist, Adam Lazzara graced the stage with his microphone and his classic microphone tricks while still managing to sing.
Throwing it up into the air might not be that impressive for frequent concert-goers, but his ability to wrap the cords around his throat while singing is definitely something one does not see everyday.
He also showed a lot of emotion when he sang, often using hand movements and for softer spots in the song, conquering the look of a helpless stance as he sang on his knees.
Sitting in the balcony, it was surprising to see how packed the seemingly small theatre was.
The venue sits 2,300 people and includes the bottom floor where the audience may stand and the second floor which contains seating.
Although it had seating room, everyone automatically stood up when the band appeared and the birds-eye view of the band from any angle of the room showcased the band very well.
The acoustics in the venue were perfect and the light show playing alongside the band truly helped highlight every song, especially when they used strobe lights to mimic the harsh electric guitar beats in the music.
Although concert security lined the bottom floor under the stage, what was surprising was the frequent numbers of people “crowd surfing” to the music.
Actually, it was quite hilarious to see the guards consistently grabbing them and helping them get back down to the ground.
Another comical moment happened during “A Decade Under the Influence,” where at the soft part in the song, Lazzara added in some of Beyonce’s lyrics, “I could have another you in a minute/matter fact, he’ll be here in a minute.”
Towards the end of the concert, as the audience members’ vocal chords must have hurt from singing along with the music, they chose to end with their most popular song off of “Louder Now , Make Damn Sure.”
With the lyrics “You won’t ever get too far from me,” consistently repeating, fans knew that although Taking Back Sunday’s concert was over, their new album is not too far away.
