According to the widely used Merriam-Webster Dictionary `global warming` is an increase in the earth’s atmospheric and oceanic temperatures widely predicted to occur due to an increase in the greenhouse effect resulting especially from pollution. Man-made pollution, that is. Our cars, factories, smoking and years of fossil fuel abuse over the many decades have caused this problem.
Along with the warming of the Earth’s surface, we come in conflict with harsh weather changes. According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), “Recent scientific assessments indicate that, as the global temperatures continue to warm due to climate change, the number and intensity of extreme events might increase.” In a nutshell the WMO is saying higher temperatures, lower temperatures, intense rainfall and longer droughts.
The American public, as well as the leadership of the country, has chosen to put global warming and climate change on the ‘back burner’ of topics – even if in a few years, the world will be exhausted from such rapid climate change. The NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) has 2005 listed as one of the hottest years since the 1890s, followed by the warmest years of 1998, 2002, 2003 and 2004.
In a 2006 publicly released statement by the California Environmental Protection Agency Secretary Linda Adams said, “Global warming is a grave threat to California’s water supply, our coastline, our environment, our economy and the public health of our citizens. It’s unlike other disasters because of the changes that happen gradually over time, but the choices we make today will greatly impact the climate inherited by our children.”
The fact that it’s human nature to use, and not replenish has become a problem; our children will have a hard enough time with a lack of resources but with a dying Earth below them – they’ll be lost for solutions. The Governor, along with the Cal/EPA and other environmental protection agencies in the state have passed many bills in order to fix the problem. It’s only fair if our administration does the same thing.
