What happens when you take some strips of felt, paint and vinyl paneling and throw it against a wall?
Amy Green, Tim Forcum and Bruce McAlster displayed their abstract, improvisational works of art at Moorpark College, where they will stay until Dec. 17.
On Nov. 20, the artists held a reception and Q & A from 3 to 5 p.m. Green, dressed in a thin paisley collared shirt and faded jeans, looked the part of the carefree artist.
This quality also describes her work: painted blue streaks on the walls, vinyl paneling and half-painted white canvases draped with strips of felt leaned against the walls all composed her pieces of art.
Green said these untitled pieces were meant to look as if they could either be in mid-construction or mid-deconstruction.
“They were beginning of ideas for what I might use on a canvas,” Green said. “They began coming alive.”
With his friendly charm and healthy physique, Tim Forcum is the man’s man. An outdoorsman at heart, Forcum told stories of biking and hiking through canyons and receiving inspiration from the aesthetic scenery.
Forcum’s oil on canvas “Count on That” almost resembles a pumpkin patch: nature. The keyword is ‘resembles’ as Forcum expresses his creativity by painting emotionally charged swirls, letting them dry, then painting more swirls over the dry ones.
Forcum explained the method to his work.
“I put something down, I respond to it, I put something else on top of it,” Forcum said.
Bruce McAlister, the third artist, did not attend the reception, but his work raised many questions from the audience.
One attendee asked if McAlister’s enigmatic coal on wood blocks, “The Day’s Are Just Filled,” was supposed to be a collection of manipulated fingerprints.
The audience never received a straight answer, as McAlister was not there to explain the piece himself.
Vicki Graham, age 19, and a Graphic Design student at Moorpark College, attended the reception and was stunned by the unconventional art forms.
“I usually see more traditional art,” Graham said, looking around her. “(This is) just not what you’re expecting.”
