Artists and innovators around the world are quickly recognizing Support Women Artists Now (S.W.A.N.) Day as a time in March to celebrate the female artists and their contributions to the world of creativity.
Recognized on March 24, S.W.A.N. Day is organized by WomenArts, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping woman artists acquire sufficient resources so that they are able to create their work.
The organization, created in 1994 by Martha Richards, has raised over $4 million in funds pooled straight back into the support of international female artists.
Local enthusiasts have their own chance to celebrate S.W.A.N. Day on the Moorpark College campus, with two coinciding events on
March 24.
The first event, taking place outside the Moorpark Performing Arts Center, dubbed an “Art Walk,” is an opportunity for local Moorpark artists to showcase their creativity, with contributors consisting of Moorpark College faculty members and students alike. The walk will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The other event will take place at 1:30 p.m. inside the Moorpark PAC building, room 100, and will feature guest artist and writer, Michele Serros, an Oxnard local and the author of “Chicana Falsa, Scandalosa!,” and “Honey Blonde Chica.”
Serros was featured in Newsweek as “One of the Top Young Women to Watch for in the
New Century.”
The event coincides with Moorpark’s Year of Service, in an effort to bring attention and praise to the artistic merit of local and international creative contributors.
