Moorpark College’s new Muslim Club provides Muslims and non-Muslims a place to interact with each other and work to help further the understanding of Islam.
Moorpark College student Muhammad Azemoon, 19, a physiology major, is the founder and president of the Muslim Club. He created the club because he believes it is important to promote greater awareness of the Islamic faith and its traditions.
“I felt that living in the post 9/11 era, it’s imperative to further the understanding of Islam among Muslims and non Muslims alike” said Azemoon. “The rich tradition of Islam is a major feature of western civilization, I think it will really benefit the community.”
The Muslim Club offers students a place in which they can learn and also help organize events with each other. The club plans on having a Palestinian awareness week this spring semester.
“Many people don’t know about the conflict between Palestine and Israel,” said Azemoon. “They just hear about one side and we want to educate them about the other side.”
The club also plans on working with the Multicultural club to host a speaker on campus next semester in hopes of educating students about their religion.
If you are interested in joining, the club meets every Wednesday from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Fountain Hall 216.
