Merton of the Movies, a new play opening at Ventura College, means something unique to the students and faculty working on the performance.
For Director Jay Varela, it’s a look back at a different time in Hollywood.
“It has a lot of the nostalgia, and references for me, and I thought it would be a lot of fun,” said Varela when explaining why he chose the play.
The play follows Merton Gill as he attempts to realize his dream of becoming a Hollywood star, despite his lack of acting talent.
Varela said this kind of story has the potential to appeal to a younger audience.
“It’s just bright for young people,” said Varela. “Most of the characters are characters they can relate to, and it’s a light hearted comedy and it’s an era I really like too, it’s the 1920’s, the flapper era, the jazz era.”
The performance starts at 8 p.m. and runs to Saturday, with tickets ranging from $9 for general admission and $7 for students, staff and seniors.
