The Oxnard College men’s baseball team reigned supreme at home over the visiting Ventura College Pirates 7-2 on Saturday.
Both teams were matching each other pitch for pitch coming into the fourth inning. After being down early 2-0 to Ventura, Oxnard put on an offensive show.
Oxnard put up five runs in the fourth with the aid of sloppy play by Ventura. Along with Oxnard batting through their entire lineup in the fourth inning, they were also given two easy runs on two badly timed wild pitches by two of the four pitchers Ventura used in this inning.
Oxnard pitcher David Hopper came into the game in the fifth inning after his team had taken back the lead. He threw three shutdown innings of relief giving up only one hit and no runs. Ventura College had no answers against Hopper’s dominating performance.
He attributes his success to having a year at Oxnard already under his belt.
“I feel more comfortable out there,” said Hopper. “It’s my sophomore year and I have more experience.”
Oxnard head coach Jon Larson was extremely happy to see his team play a full nine innings of baseball after two rough games.
“We had a few late inning meltdowns that last couple of games,” Larson said. “We just need to continue figuring out are pitching roles. If we can put it all together the sky is the limit for this team.”
With the win Oxnard College climbed to 2-2, while Ventura College fell to 2-2. Oxnard will face LA mission at home on Tuesday while Ventura will head out to the Mt. Sac tournament in Walnut, where they will take on Palomar on Feb. 6.
