The Oxnard College softball team could not muster up enough run support for Condors pitcher Michelle Getman in a 2-0 lost to Cuesta College Thursday afternoon.
The Condors (13-9, 4-2 WSC) were able to get on base at times, but not consistent enough to utilize their strong pitching. Freshman infielder Priscilla Garcia was the bulk of the Condors offense, boasting two doubles.
Despite a couple of hits and a score off a sacrifice fly, Getman’s pitching remained solid throughout the game.
The Condors defense and pitching forced the Cougars (10-12, 5-5) to play small ball, which included bunting for base hits in order to scratch and claw their way towards scoring.
The issue was execution on the offensive end that ended up nullifying the Condors’ efforts defensively.
According to third base coach Bob Zappia, the main reason for the loss was that a lack of execution on the offensive end ended up nullifying the Condors’ efforts defensively.
“We had opportunities early in the game, [but] we couldn’t get it done,” Zappia said. “Instead of hitting the ball on the ground when we had runners in scoring position…we hit the ball in the air. You can’t score that way.”
While the shutout could be looked at as a great defensive effort from the Cougars, it was also in part due to the Condors’ inability to make simple plays.
Freshman infielder Priscilla Garcia believed the issues were all mental today and that with some fine-tuning the offense will be okay.
“We can hit off that pitcher,” Garcia said. “She wasn’t difficult at all.”
The Condors hope to improve their hitting when they take on rival Ventura College at home Tuesday, March 23.
